Twenty-five years ago today, on September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 of our fellow Americans lost their lives in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania in the deadliest terrorist attack in our nation’s history. This includes more than four hundred federal, state, and local officers, agents, firefighters, flight crews, and civilians who ran into harm’s way to save others.  Every Port Authority and New York City Police Officer lost that day was a NAPO member.

As we remember those taken from us on September 11, 2001, we cannot fail to recognize as well those we continue to lose from the lasting effects of that day. First responders across the country continue to die due to their rescue and recovery efforts on and after 9/11, from cancers and other serious health conditions related to sustained exposure to toxins found at Ground Zero and at the Pentagon. Tragically, first responder deaths from 9/11-related conditions will soon outnumber those who died on that fateful day.

Today, and every day, NAPO remembers our own members and all those who selflessly and without hesitation gave their lives that others might live.  We will forever honor these officers, their families, and all survivors of 9/11. We will never forget.
