NAPO Action Alert: Discharge Petition being Filed on H.R. 82
August 22, 2024
Join NAPO in Urging Members of Congress to Sign H.R. 82 Discharge Petition. Act Now!
Representatives Garret Graves (R-LA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) are filing a discharge petition on H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, that will be available for signatures as soon as Congress returns from recess on September 10. A discharge petition needs 218 signatures to successfully move a bill to the House floor for a vote. The goal is to garner the 218 signatures as soon as possible once Congress returns and have a vote on the bill in September before Congress adjourns again in October to campaign.
H.R. 82 currently has 325 bipartisan cosponsors and the Senate companion, S. 597, has 62 cosponsors. The Social Security Fairness Act has the support necessary to pass Congress by a vast majority. It is time to put words into action and finally pass this vital legislation. NAPO is asking every cosponsor of H.R. 82 to sign the discharge petition filed by Representatives Graves and Spanberger and urging them to do so as soon as Congress returns to session in September. NAPO sent this letter to all the cosponsors on August 22.
We need your help to make a full court press on all the current cosponsors to urge them to sign the discharge petition on September 10 and act on their support for repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). We are asking for your help as this will be a heavy lift. Please reach out to your Congressional Representative(s) and request that they sign the discharge petition.
