NAPO Washington Reports

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has tendered her resignation to the President

January 10, 2013

As we reported yesterday, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has tendered her resignation to the President. No successor has yet been nominated nor "floated" by the White House. The early word is that we can expect the nomination and confirmation process to be contentious over this cabinet position. NAPO feels very strongly that the new Secretary of Labor must be familiar with, and strongly supportive of, the special requirements and needs of America's public safety employees in the workplace, especially law enforcement officers. We need vigorous enforcement of the FLSA, safety, pension and benefits and workplace representation laws already on the book.

In a related matter, the White House indicated today that Attorney General Eric Holder is likely to stay on in his post for the foreseeable future. NAPO is committed to continue to work with Mr. Holder to better safeguard the health and safety of America's law enforcement community and their families, including enforcement of the laws which penalize attacks on officers, understanding and reducing stress on the job, reducing officer suicide, and supporting the survivors of slain and deceased officers.
