NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF POLICE ORGANIZATIONS’ 501(c)(3), THE POLICE RESEARCH & EDUCATION PROJECT ELIGIBLE FOR CFC DONATIONS

Washington, D.C. – The Police Research and Education Project (PREP), the National Association of Police Organizations’ (NAPO) sister 501 (c) (3) research and education organization is eligible for Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) donations.

Federal employees are encouraged to support PREP during the Combined Federal Campaign by designating CFC #0423. PREP was founded by NAPO in 1991 to promote, through research and education, the well-being of police officers and their families, and to educate and inform the public about law enforcement and the role of law enforcement officers in a democratic society.

Through the umbrella organization America’s Charities, municipal employees can also designate the PREP in Combined Municipal Campaigns across the country. For example, in New York City, PREP is CMC# 1801.

CFC donations enable PREP to work on behalf of law enforcement officers in several arenas. Such funds go toward the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Rights Center which was launched in 1994 through PREP, to serve as a legal defense fund for police officers and their attorneys. The Rights Center also serves as a clearinghouse for information, conducts research and holds educational seminars for law enforcement officers. The Rights Center has filed several briefs amicus curiae on behalf of law enforcement officers including six to the United States Supreme Court.

PREP has also published surveys on states’ fireman rules, collective bargaining laws and a law enforcement officer’s right to carry a firearm off-duty. PREP has conducted research on law enforcement stress and its effect on the family under the auspices of two National Institute of Justice grants.

Funds will also help PREP put on its annual TOP COPS Awards® ceremony in Washington, D.C. to recognize law enforcement officers from across the country who are nominated by their peers for outstanding service. The purpose of the TOP COPS Awards® is to promote positive media attention and support for the nation’s often poorly portrayed and under-recognized police force.

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) is a coalition of police unions and associations from across the United States that serves in Washington, DC to advance the interests of America’s law enforcement officers through legislative and legal advocacy, political action and education. Founded in 1978, NAPO now represents 4,000 police organizations and more than 220,000 sworn law enforcement officers.
