On December 1, 2011 the House Communications
Subcommittee passed proposed legislation (16-4) that would grant
the allocation of spectrum, known as the D Block, to public safety.
This is a legislative victory for NAPO. Prior to House Energy and
Commerce Chairman Greg Waldon’s (R-OR) introduction of the legislation,
many House Republicans were in favor of auctioning off the spectrum.
This past June, NAPO endorsed Senator Rockefeller’s
(D-WV) bill S. 911, The Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation
Act. Although the House draft varies in specifications, NAPO recognizes
the subcommittee’s passage as an important step to the overall completion
of this critical legislation.
NAPO continues to advocate for the allocation
of the D Block to public safety. Furthermore, we continue to support
the view that the D Block should be interoperable across multiple
bandclasses. It is important to ensure a reliable, robust broadband
network that meets the needs of a modern first responder community;
NAPO has been and continues to be proactive in advocating the allocation
of the D Block to public safety. We look forward to working with
members of Congress to advance this shared interest.
